I did it out of curiosity then, without realising I was building a miniature database of my own. After nearly nine years, what I have learned is not that Vietnamese volleyball is weak or strong. It is this: almost nobody, including people working professionally, has enough data to answer the simplest question — is this team better or worse than it was last season?

International data systems have existed for a long time; the problem in Vietnam is not technology, it is the incentive to publish.

At events run by the International Volleyball Federation, every match is recorded in a standardised information system where each touch is coded by position, action type and outcome. To know where a team sits in that cycle, you need the age distribution of the starting lineup, the minutes played by the under-22 group, and the share of youth-academy players promoted to the senior squad. None of this is published.

The result is a youth development system with no measurable output. Academies and talent pipelines send players up, but no mechanism shows what percentage of them actually earn a starting place, or at what age. From my own hand-compiled squad lists across seasons, that share is far smaller than stakeholders usually suggest. But because nobody publishes, both the small figure and the large figure stand equally firm in debate.

The transfer market is where opacity produces the most direct consequences, because there a lack of data converts straight into a lack of money.

For foreign players, recruitment in Vietnam relies largely on video, agent recommendation and a few trial sessions. There is no standard metric set to compare a hitter playing in a second-tier European league with one in a regional league — because those leagues record under different conventions, and the domestic league has no data to convert between them.

Whether a foreign player is judged a success or failure depends almost entirely on whether that club has good reception. This is rarely mentioned. An outside hitter scores a lot or a little depending on the quality of the pass she receives, and that quality is decided by six other people. Without the team's perfect-pass rate, the whole outcome is attributed to the hitter. This misattribution costs real money: contracts are cut, or renewed at the wrong salary.

For domestic players the situation is even harder to measure. A national-team player negotiating a contract has no independent data to prove her value beyond personal reputation and her national-team place. Reputation is an asset, but it cannot be priced, cannot be transferred, and is distributed very unfairly among people of comparable professional ability.

The first is resources. Standard scouting requires trained staff, software and operating time. For clubs on limited budgets this is a non-mandatory expense, and non-mandatory expenses are cut first. This explains why many clubs do not keep records.

Coaches keep a professional reputation built on narrative rather than metrics. Organisers avoid responsibility for numbers that might show declining league quality. When two different scouts record the same match, they produce two different datasets. I often remind myself that this is only clearly visible after a system has run long enough to expose its crack. Here, the system has never run, so the crack sits in the empty space. An empty space is harder to see than a crack. That is why this problem has persisted so long without anyone being held responsible for it.

I note a few signals worth tracking, all small and specific.

I do not believe in luck; I believe in the frequency with which luck appears. And frequency can only be measured when someone sits down to record it.

Data never lies; only people lie to themselves. In Vietnamese volleyball today, we have not yet reached the stage where data deceives us. We are at an earlier stage: there is no data to do the deceiving. That is both the greatest disadvantage and the cheapest opportunity this sport currently has.

When someone finally does, that will be the moment Vietnamese volleyball begins to know where it stands.
